How to calculate cost per ticket
Cost per ticket is the total cost of running support for a month divided by the tickets solved in that month. Include everything the team needs to exist: pay and taxes, software seats, management time, training and the share of office costs.
People are almost always the largest share, so the number moves most when each person handles more tickets: fewer repeat contacts, faster answers from good macros, and questions customers never need to ask because the docs answered them.
Track it monthly, next to ticket volume. A falling cost per ticket with rising satisfaction is the result you want; a falling cost with falling satisfaction usually means corners are being cut.
Questions
What is a typical cost per ticket?
It varies widely with the channel and the product. Simple email or chat questions often cost a few dollars each, while technical B2B support can cost far more per ticket. Your own trend matters more than an industry average.
Should I count tickets created or tickets solved?
Solved, for a month that is over. Counting created tickets flatters a month when the backlog grew.
How do I lower cost per ticket?
Answer repeat questions in your docs and let an assistant serve them, reduce back-and-forth by asking for details up front, and route tickets to the person who can solve them first time.
