How to tell users to cancel a subscription on iPhone and Android

Users often look for a cancel button inside the app, but subscriptions bought through the App Store or Google Play are managed in their store account. Give them the exact path for their platform.

Replace the text in [brackets] before sending.

Subject: How to cancel your [App] subscription

Hi [Customer name],

Since you subscribed through the App Store, the subscription is managed by Apple, not inside [App]. Here's how to cancel it:

1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad. 2. Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions. 3. Choose [App] and tap Cancel Subscription.

You'll keep access until the end of the period you've already paid for, and you won't be charged again after that. Deleting the app on its own doesn't cancel the subscription.

If you're cancelling because something isn't working, I'd really like to hear about it.

Subject: How to cancel your [App] subscription

Hi [Customer name],

Subscriptions bought through Google Play are managed in your Google account. To cancel:

1. Open the Play Store app. 2. Tap your profile picture, then Payments & subscriptions, then Subscriptions. 3. Choose [App] and tap Cancel subscription.

Make sure you're signed in to the same Google account you used to subscribe. Your access continues until the end of the current billing period. Uninstalling the app doesn't stop the subscription.

If there's something we could have done better, just reply and let me know.

Happy to help. Subscriptions are managed in your store account rather than in the app. iPhone: Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions → [App] → Cancel. Android: Play Store → profile picture → Payments & subscriptions → Subscriptions → [App] → Cancel.

Tips

  • Point out that uninstalling the app doesn't cancel the subscription; it is the most common misunderstanding.
  • Mention signing in with the account they subscribed with, especially for families with shared devices.
  • If you also sell subscriptions on the web, ask where they subscribed before sending store instructions.
  • Keep these steps in your help center too, and update them when the OS menus change.

Avoid

  • Making the user ask twice before you give the cancellation steps.
  • Saying you have cancelled it for them when only the store can.
  • Promising a refund for the remaining period.
